Abstract

Solid and liquid hydrocarbons, such as paraffin wax, crude petroleum, tars or distillation products are desulphurized and hydrogenated by heating under pressure with hydrogen or gases containing or yielding hydrogen in presence of iron which has been activated with cobalt or nickel or both. The iron is prepared by impregnating iron oxide with a solution of cobalt or nickel salt, or by precipitating a solution of an iron salt containing cobalt or nickel. The oxides or carbonates become reduced in the subsequent treatment. Temperatures of 200-475 DEG C. and pressures of 30-200 atmospheres may be used. Specification 218,989, [Class 91, Oils &c.], is referred to.ALSO:Solid and liquid hydrocarbons such as paraffin wax, crude petroleu, tars, and distillation products are desulphurized and hydrogenated by heating under pressure with hydrogen or gases containing or yielding hydrogen in presence of iron which has been activated with cobalt or nickel or both.
