Abstract

327,194. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Dec. 3, 1928. Mineral oils, purifying.-The removal of sulphur from crude benzol by treatment with hydrogen under pressure at elevated temperatures in the presence of catalysts is combined in one operation with the destructive hydrogenation of other carbonaceous materials. The crude benzol mav be mixed with a middle oil or with coal; or it may be used to extract coal or destructive hydrogenation residues, the extract then being destructively hydrogenated without removal of the solvent. Suitable catalysts contain a metal of the sixth group, or cobalt, or compounds of these. Temperatures of 380‹-550‹ C. and pressures up to 1000 atmospheres may be employed. In an example 3 parts of middle, oil from the destructive hydrogenation of Mid-German brown coal and 2 parts of benzol containing sulphur are passed with hydrogen at 460‹ C. and 200 atmospheres pressure over a catalyst of molybdic acid, zinc oxide, magnesia, and chromic acid. The product contains 60 per cent of constituents boiling below 185‹ C., has a sulphur content of less than 0.02 per cent, and may be used as a non- knocking motor fuel. Specifications 296,984 and 301,946 are referred to.
