Abstract
185,174. Bolton, E. R., and Lush, E. J. May 24, 1921. Fuller's earth; fatty acids and glycerine, obtaining by decomposing fats and fatty oils.- Filler's earth, charcoal and like purifiers of fats and fatty oils, and nickel or other catalysts used in hydrogenating fats and fatty oils, are regenerated by treatment with superheated steam until their temperature is 230-300‹ C. so that the oil is hydrolyzed and glycerine and fatty acid distil over. To reduce the loss of glycerine the steaming may commence under pressure, which may later be reduced to or below atmospheric to promote distillation. The oil-free fuller's earth or charcoal may be treated hot with air to char organic impurities, and then with steam, preferably superheated, before cooling. A suitable apparatus comprises a closed receptacle a which is provided with inlet b and outlet c for the charcoal &c., a grid g or like support for the charcoal &c., an agitator f, a coil h for steam or air, a safety valve i, and a pipe leading to a condenser k and reservoirs p. The fatty acid and glycerine are removed from the vessels p and separated in any known manner. The vessel may be heated externally by fuel or combustion gases within the jacket e formed by brickwork d.
