Fats and fatty oils, purifying.-Oils and fats, e.g. cacoanut oil, are punned by treatment at about 170‹ C. and in presence of animal charcoal with 1.5 times the quantity of glycerine or other alcohol necesary to esterify the free fatty acids, followed bv washing with water to remove the excess of alcohol or by any known alkali treatment to complete the purification. Using the apparatus shown, the oil and about 1 per cent of animal charcoal are heated by a steam coil 5 to about 170‹ C. in an air-free vessel 1, while a current of dry hot carbon dioxide is passed in through a pipe 6 and the necessary glycerine is added by degrees. Steam, carbon dioxide, and volatile impurities are led to a condenser 8, and the carbon dioxide by a pipe 11 to a compressor 12 and reservoir 13 for re-use. The treated oil is run off through a valve 14 to a filter press. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also treatment without animal charcoal, and also specifies the treatment of 4,000 kilograms of oil containing 20 per cent of free acids with 100 kilograms of glycerine in presence of 40 kilograms of " Purite " or other active charcoal. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
