Abstract
In a process for purifying fats and fatty oils in which the oil is first neutralized and then submitted to high temperature bleaching or hardening treatment, the fatty acids formed during the heat treatment are removed by distillation in vacuo with steam or an inert gas. Maize oil after treatment with Fuller's earth, charcoal, or alkali, is heated in vacuo to 280 DEG C. until the oil is colourless, and steam or an inert gas such as carbon dioxide or hydrogen is passed in during or after the heat treatment, or in alternation therewith. Alternatively, the heated oil is sprayed into an evacuated vessel in which the fatty acids are distilled off. The high temperature bleaching treatment may be replaced by a hardening treatment with hydrogen at 100-160 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst.
