Abstract

Motor fuels such as crude gasoline, crude benzol, and synthetic products are treated with anhydrous ferric chloride in alcoholic solution, before (with or without warming) or during distillation. The treatment with ferric chloride may be performed above the incipient boiling point of the fuel, preferably at increased pressure. In the example, crude benzol is heated with alcoholic ferric chloride for an hour at 70 DEG C., some alcohol and benzol are then distilled off, and the residue steam-distilled.
