Abstract

Natural or cracked benzine, benzol and similar motor fuels are freed from carbon disulphide, mercaptans and analogous sulphur compounds by heating the hydrocarbons with an aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline earth under pressure. Motor benzole is heated in an autoclave with caustic soda under a pressure of 15 atmospheres at 150 DEG C., for 1 hour. The hydrocarbons or the fractions thereof boiling between 78 and 100 DEG C., which contain most of these sulphur compounds and thiophene, may be submitted to a preliminary treatment with concentrated or dilute sulphuric acid.
