Abstract

An alkyl sulphochloride or a mixture thereof with the oil used as starting material for its production is refined by treatment with anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, e.g. at the boiling point of the HF and under appropriate excess pressure, or at 0-15 DEG C. under atmospheric pressure. In examples, hydrogenated diesel oil fractions are sulphochlorinated, the products refined with HF, and hydrolysed with caustic soda to the sulphonate or treated with a mixture of phenol and cresol to produce the corresponding sulphonic acid esters.
