Abstract
Sulphurized derivatives of higher paraffin hydrocarbons are made by treating mineral acid esters or ester salts of aliphatic mono- or polyvalent alcohols containing at least 8 carbon atoms and containing at least one primary alcoholic group, with the exception of hydrohalic acid esters, with alkali polysulphides at elevated temperatures, advantageously under pressure and with the addition of an indifferent diluent. The products may be subsequently treated with oxidizing agents according to Specification 361,357 to form the corresponding disulphides and sulphonic acids. The starting materials may be obtained by saponifying or reducing the natural fats or fatty acids or other esters thereof and converting the alcohol into the ester by treatment, e.g. with a mineral acid. In an example, a mixture of higher primary aliphatic alcohols obtained by catalytically hydrogenating coco-oil or a mixture of the corresponding fatty acids or by reducing the oil with sodium and alcohol is treated with chlorsulphonic acid and the mixture of alkylsulphuric acids obtained is heated with alcoholic caustic soda and potassium trisulphide; the product obtained is oxidized to the corresponding sulphonic acid with nitric acid.
