Abstract
Sulphuric esters of long chain unsaturated alcohols, such as are obtained by reduction of unsaturated fatty oils, or free acids, esters or amides derived therefrom, are prepared by treatment of the said alcohols with a compound of a tertiary amine and sulphur trioxide in equimolecular proportions. The latter compounds may be prepared by direct addition or by using a pyrosulphate (cf. Specification 317,736, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.]). Diluents, other than tertiary amines may be employed. In examples: (1) a carbon disulphide solution of olein alcohol is added to a mixture of carbon disulphide, dimethylaniline and chlorsulphonic acid; (2) commercial oleyl alcohol or the alcohols obtained from sperm oil are treated with pyridine-sulphurtrioxide; (3) sodium pyrosulphate is added to a heated mixture of pyridine and oleyl alcohol; (4) sperm oil alcohols are treated with a mixture of pyridine and sodium pyrosulphate. The products are stated to be cleansing and softening agents and their cleansing action upon textiles is increased by the addition of inorganic salts, e.g. sodium chloride or sulphate. Other wetting agents, detergents, bleaching agents or solvents may be added when treating textiles. Secondary amines such as alkyl-o-toluidines which react like tertiary amines may be used in place of the latter. Specification 308,824, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], also is referred to.ALSO:Sulphuric esters of long chain unsaturated alcohols, which may be used as cleansing-agents, are prepared by treatment of the said alcohols with a compound of a tertiary amine and sulphur trioxide in equimolecular proportions.
