Abstract

A washing preparation comprises a mixture of a washing-agent which is stable to the salts which cause the hardness of water, with a sulphonation product of cellulose or of a cellulose ether, in which the cellulose or cellulose ether has undergone practically no decomposition, together if desired, with another washing-agent, a wetting-agent, a dispersing agent, a foaming-agent, an alkaline substance, a substance yielding oxygen, or a stabilizer. Suitable undegraded sulphonation products may be obtained by working at low temperatures and using pyridine-sulphonic acid or a mixture of pyridine and chlorosulphonic acid as the sulphonating agent. Again, the cellulose may be suspended in liquid sulphurous acid, and fuming sulphuric acid, chlorosulphonic acid or sulphur trioxide introduced. The sulphonation may be carried out in the presence of organic solvents such as methylene chloride, ethyl chloride and diethyl ether. Examples are given of the sulphonation of cellulose, methyl cellulose and oxyethyl cellulose. Suitable washing-agents stable to hard water are the sodium salt of the product of reaction of oleic acid chloride with methyl taurine, the sodium salt of the oleic acid ester of oxyethane sulphonic acid, the potassium salt of a commercial octodecyl alcohol sulphonate consisting of about 80 per cent of octadecyl alcohol sulphonate and 20 per cent hexadecyl alcohol sulphonate, and the sodium salt of a sulphonated octyl-phenyl-polyglycol ether obtained by treating octyl-phenol with 5 mols. of ethylene oxide and sulphonating the polyglycol ether with chlorosulphonic acid.
