Abstract

Two or more soapless detergents are dissolved in water to give a clear solution, at least one of the detergents being present in an amount which, when dissolved separately under the same conditions in the same amount of aqueous solvent, would not yield a clear solution. Anionic detergents such as the alkyl aryl sulphonates, alkyl sulphonates, fatty alcohol sulphates, condensation products of fatty acids with taurine and its derivatives, and monoglyceride sulphates may be used. Preferred anionic detergents are those of formula R.SO3M where M is an alkali or alkaline earth metal and R is either an aliphatic group containing at least 10 carbon atoms and an ester or amide linkage or an alkyl substituted mononuclear aromatic ring. Specified examples are the salts of oleyl methyl taurine, salts of fatty acid esters of isethionic acid and the sodium salts of dodecyl benzene sulphonates and dodecyl toluene sulphonates. Non-ionic detergents such as the polyethylene glycol ethers of long-chain alcohols or of alkylated phenols and partial fatty acid esters of polyglycerol or polyglycol may also be employed in the compositions. The total detergent content of the solution may be at least 10 per cent. by weight, and frequently 20 per cent or more. The solutions may be prepared by mixing aqueous pastes or solutions of each detergent, warming to effect solution if necessary, or by dissolving the mixed detergents in the desired amount of water. In an example 20 parts by weight of a paste containing 35 per cent. of the sodium salt of oleyl methyl taurine, 8 per cent. of sodium chloride and 57 per cent. of water are mixed at 40 DEG -50 DEG C. with 40 parts by weight of a solution containing 30 per cent. of an alkyl sulphonate, 2 per cent. of sodium chloride and 68 per cent. of water to give a solution containing 32 per cent. of soapless detergents.
