Abstract

A soap composition comprises a water-soluble soap and either a small proportion (i.e. up to 15 per cent of the weight of the soap), of an alkyl oleate of which the alkyl group contains 3-10 carbon atoms, or both a small proportion of mineral oil and a small proportion of an emulsifying agent which is not a soap. Such compositions form concentrated aqueous solutions containing at least 15 per cent and preferably 15-25 per cent of soap, based on the weight of soap and water together, and exhibit exceptionally low viscosities. The preferred soap is sodium oleate. The alkyl oleate may be n-butyl, n-hexyl or n-octyl oleate and is preferably present in an amount of from 2-10 per cent by weight of the soap. The mineral oil has a preferred viscosity of 40-100 S.S.U. at 100 DEG F and both mineral oil and emulsifying agent may be present in an amount of from 2-10 per cent each, based on the weight of the soap. Specified emulsifying agents are the polyoxyethylene mono-esters of fatty acids such as lauric, oleic or stearic acids, sulphonated long chain petroleum hydrocarbons, mahogany sulphonates, alkyl aryl sulphonates, fatty acid esters of sorbitan, such as sorbitan mono laurate, monopalmitate, monostearate, tristearate, or monooleate, diethylene glycol monolaurate, polyoxyethylene ethers, condensation products of alkyl phenols with ethylene oxide, sulphonated fatty acid esters and turkey red oil.
