Abstract
Porous concrete is prepared from a cement mix containing an equeous solution of polyvinyl alcohol of high molecular weight, air or another gas being incorporated by agitation either in the polyvinyl alcohol solution or in the mix. In a preferred process a surface tension reducing agent insensitive to the ingredients of the cement, particularly a sulphonate of a fatty acid of high molecular weight or a sulphonated derivative of alkylated napthalene, is added to a polyvinyl alcohol solution, which preferably contains 1.5 per cent or less of polyvinyl alcohol, the solution foamed and a mix of cement and water subsequently mixed with this foam. The cement mix may contain fillers such as fine sand or infusorial earth, and the dimensions of the pores of the final product may be regulated by varying the concentration of the polyvinyl alcohol and of the surface tension reducing agent if present.
