1,131,333. Alkylene oxide condensates. MARLES-KUHLMANN-WYANDOTTE. 27 June, 1966 [28 June, 1965], No. 28813/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C3 and C5] Biodegradable, liquid, water miscible condensation products comprise a cogeneric mixture of compounds each having the formula wherein R is a straight chain alkyl group having from 8 to 20 carbon atoms, a has an average value of 3À75 to 12À75, b has an average value of from 1À7 to 7À0, the ratio a : b being from 1À8:1 to 2À2:1 and the weight per cent of said compounds in said mixture is such that from 0-10 wt. per cent have an R containing 8 carbon atoms, from 0-50 wt. per cent have an R containing 10 carbon atoms, from 0-95 wt. per cent have an R containing 12 carbons, from 0-95 wt. per cent have an R containing 14 carbons, from 0-95 wt. per cent have an R containing 16 carbons, from 0-50 wt. per cent have an R containing 18 carbons and from 0-10 wt. per cent have an R containing 20 carbons. The products may be prepared by condensing a suitable alcohol mixturehaving an average molecular weight of from 165 to 265 and conforming to the weight per cents stated for R, with ethylene oxide in the presence of a basic catalyst followed by condensation of the ethoxylated product with propylene oxide. The condensations are preferably carried out at elevated temperatures and pressures. Alcohol mixtures specified include Alfol 1218 (Alfol is a Registered Trade Mark) which is approximately a mixture of 40% by weight C 12 alcohol, 30% by weight C 14 alcohol, 20% by wt. C 16 alcohol and 10% by wt. C 18 alcohol, a mixture of C 12 - C 18 alcohols derived from coconut oil and a mixture of C 16 -C 18 alcohols namely hydrogenated tallow alcohol. Use.-Rinse additive for automatic washing machines.
