Abstract

A lubricating composition suitable for use in lubricating high-speed machinery, and for use in the food and textile industries, comprises mineral lubricating oil and two polymers, one having a molecular weight range within the range of 64,000-81,000 Staudinger Mean Molecular Weight and the other having a molecular weight range within the range of 99,000-120,000 Staudinger Mean Molecular Weight, the polymers being polymers of butenes or copolymers of butenes with up to 10 weight per cent of C2-C7 mono- and/or di-olefins. The polymers may be prepared as such or polymers with a higher molecular weight range than desired may be produced and then degraded. The preferred polymers are homopolymers of isobutylene, although copolymers of isobutylene with isoprene or butadiene may be used. The lubricating composition may be diluted with additional lubricating oil, e.g. mineral lubricating oil, and may also contain additional ingredients such as extreme pressure additives, detergents and antioxidants (e.g. alkyl derivatives of phenols such as di-tert. butyl-p-cresol). The proportion of the polymers employed may be sufficient to thicken the lubricating oil to a grease consistency. Specification 761,359 is referred to.
