Abstract

Sulphur-containing lubricating compositions such as straight cutting oils, drawing compounds and tapping pastes are prepared by incorporating in a lubricating oil or grease-base insoluble amorphous sulphur having a particle size below 5 m and chiefly between 1/2 m and 2 m . A proportion of soluble sulphur less than is required to saturate the lubricating base may also be present. The insoluble sulphur or the mixture of insoluble and soluble sulphur is prepared by complete or partial extraction of sublimed flowers of sulphur (as distinct from ground rock sulphur) with carbon bisulphide, dichlorethylene, or mineral or fatty oil. The extracted sulphur is reduced to the required particle size by grinding with lubricating oil (which may be the base in which the sulphur is to be incorporated) at a temperature not exceeding 45 DEG C. The sulphur does not separate out in service in the hard crystalline form. According to examples the oil or grease base may be a mineral lubricating oil, or mixtures of solid and liquid vegetable, animal or fish oils, or petroleum jelly; the proportion of sulphur present varies from 0.15 to 7 per cent.
