Abstract

A lubricant composition comprises an oil base and an extreme pressure additive comprising a phosphorus sulphide and an alkyl or aryl ester of an acid of phosphorus. The phosphorus sulphide may be the sesquisulphide and as esters tricresyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate and phosphite, triphenyl phosphate and methyl or ethyl phosphates and phosphites; the use of partial esters of the phosphorus acids is also mentioned. Proportions of 0.1-20 per cent of the ester and 0.01-0.2 per cent of the phosphorus sulphide may be used. The lubricants may comprise mineral or fatty oil bases, or both, and may also contain substances such as sulphur, chlorine, arsenic, selenium or tellurium, or soaps or vegetable oils. As an example, an extreme pressure lubricating composition comprises from 80-99 per cent oil or grease base and a concentrated additive comprising a fatty body, such as sperm oil or lard oil, 2-10 per cent of sulphur, 0.1 to 2 per cent of phosphorus sesquisulphide and 0.2 to 20 per cent of tricresyl phosphate.
