Abstract

Lubricating compositions especially for use under high pressures consist of a lubricating oil base and an ester of a thio-phosphorus acid. Halogenated thio-phosphorus esters are preferred. Esters of thio-phosphoric, thio-phosphorus or of the corresponding oxy-thio-phosphorus acids, in which only part of the oxygen atoms are replaced by sulphur, may be used. Specified esters are tri-ortho-chlor-phenyl-thio-phosphate, and tri-tertiary-butyl-chlorphenyl-thio-phosphate. Up to 20 per cent of these esters is added to a mineral lubricating oil. Lubricating oil containing up to 2 per cent of the ester may be added to motor fuels as an upper cylinder lubricant. Specification 285,000, [Class 91], is referred to.
