Abstract

Sulphurized organic acids are prepared by heating the acids with sulphur preferably at about 340--400 DEG F., hydrogen sulphide being removed from the product, e.g. by the use of a weak oxidizing or reducing agent or by blowing with sulphur dioxide. Highly unsaturated fatty acids are partly hydrogenated before being sulphurized. Acids specified as being treated are oleic acid, rosin acid, and a by-product obtained from pine wood consisting of rosin acids, unsaturated fatty acids and sterols.ALSO:A lubricating or cutting oil comprises a hydrocarbon oil and a small proportion of a sulphurized organic acid. The sulphurized acids are prepared by heating the acids with sulphur, preferably at about 340--400 DEG F., hydrogen sulphide being removed from the product, e.g. by the use of a weak oxidizing or reducing agent or by blowing with sulphur dioxide. Highly unsaturated fatty acids are partly hydrogenated before being sulphurized. In examples, a low viscosity petroleum lubricating oil is blended with the products obtained by heating sulphur with oleic acid, rosin oil, or a by-product obtained from pine wood consisting of rosin acids, unsaturated fatty acids and sterols. The latter product may also be blended with a mixture of steam-refined cylinder stock and neutral oil.
