Abstract

Sulphurized esters of a mono- or di-hydric alcohol and an organic acid are prepared by heating the esters with sulphur, hydrogen sulphide being removed from the product by the use of a weak oxidizing or reducing agent, or by blowing with sulphur dioxide. The esters of highly unsaturated acids are partly hydrogenated before being sulphurized. Esters specified as being so treated are methyl oleate, ethyl abietate, the methyl esters of rosin oil, and the esters obtained by heating methyl alcohol with a by-product from pine wood, which by-product comprises rosin acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and higher alcohols.ALSO:A lubricating or cutting oil comprises a hydrocarbon oil and a small percentage of a sulphurized ester of a mono- or dihydric alcohol and an organic acid. The sulphurized compounds are prepared by heating the esters with sulphur, hydrogen sulphide being removed from the product, e.g. by the use of a weak oxidizing or reducing agent or by blowing with sulphur dioxide. The esters of highly unsaturated acids are partly hydrogenated before being sulphurized. The compounds are added to the hydrocarbon oil in an amount such that the product contains from 0,1 to 6 per cent of sulphur. In examples. a mixture of pale oil and steam-refined stock is mixed with sulphurized methyl oleate. and black oil is blended with the products obtained by heating sulphur with methyl oleate, ethyl abietate, the methyl esters of rosin oil, or the esters obtained by heating methyl alcohol with a bye-product obtained from pine wood, which bye-product comprises resin acids, unsaturated fatty acids, and higher alcohols.
