Abstract

Thickened oils are prepared by voltolizing a fish oil consisting essentially of an unsaturated ester of a monocarboxylic acid and a monohydric alcohol, e.g. sperm, dolphin or porpoise jaw oil. The oils may be fractionated or purified before treatment, and may be mixed with petroleum, mineral oils, waxes or shale oil before or during treatment. The voltolization may be carried out in an atmosphere of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen or air, and in the presence of sulphur, a halogen, selenium, hydrogen sulphide, phosphorus, boron fluoride or a ketene. The voltolized product may be separated into products having higher and lower molecular weights by treating with propane, secondary butyl alcohol, methanol or carbon tetrachloride. The products may be used as lubricants, plasticizers and impregnating agents, in admixture with resins, or as ingredients in coating compositions and plastic compositions; they may be added to petroleum oils, solvent-extracted oils, hydrogenated oils, synthetic hydrocarbon oils as disclosed in Specification 349,071, the distillation products of tars, lignites, shale and peat, fatty oils, greases, Diesel fuels, and lubricating, cable, insulating or textile oils. In examples, sperm oil is voltolized and a petroleum lubricating oil added either before or after the completion of the voltolization.
