In the production of phenol resins, linseed oil is replaced by a highly unsaturated drying-oil obtained by splitting fish oil or like material, distilling the acids into fractions of low and of high iodine value respectively, and wholly or partially esterifying with glycerine the fraction of high iodine value.ALSO:Drying-oils are obtained by splitting fish oil or similar material containing fatty acids or glycerides having a high iodine value, distilling the acids into fractions of low and of high iodine value respectively, and partially or wholly esterifying with glycerine the fraction of high iodine value. The acid fraction of low iodine value may be hydrogenated to form soap fat. The highly unsaturated oil obtained may be used in place of linseed oil, e.g. in phenol resins.
