Abstract
A grease composition consists of a major portion of a soap and a heavy hydrocarbon oil, preferably over 40 per cent of each, and a minor proportion of an organic oxygenated plasticizing agent consisting of pitch or a mixture of pitch and glycerol. The pitch preferred is fatty acid pitch such as cottonseed oil pitch. Soft stearine pitch and the residue obtained by distilling natural or synthetic fatty acids such as those obtained by the limited oxidation of paraffin wax may be used. In the example, 51 1/2 lb. of steam-refined cylinder oil is heated to about 160 DEG F. and 3 lb. of cottonseed oil pitch of m.pt. 86 DEG F. added. After stirring, 21,9 lb. of free tallow acids and 20 lb. of prime tallow are added and a 40 B<\>ae. solution of NaOH containing 6,75 lb. of NaOH is added, the temperature being gradually raised from 160 to 225 DEG F. The mixture is then rapidly heated to 500 DEG F. and maintained at this temperature for 1- 1/2 hour to render the grease anhydrous. The cooked grease is then withdrawn from the bottom into moulds. The product is a non-bleeding grease practically free from water.
