Abstract

White or colourless fatty acids are produced from soap stock, particularly "black grease" from the refining of cotton-seed oil, by distilling in the presence of a small proportion of an adsorbent such as fuller's earth. Alternatively the fatty acid may be distilled, the distilled acid bleached with the adsorbent, and the bleached acid redistilled either with or without removal of the adsorbent. The adsorbent may be used in a proportion of 1 to 2 per cent of the fatty acid.
