Abstract

The residues obtained in the distillation of levulinic acid are saponified with an acid or an alkali, and in the latter case the mixture is afterwards acidified. The saponification product may then be distilled to yield a further quantity of levulinic acid, or it may be heated with an alcohol to yield a levulinic ester; alternatively, levulinic acid may be recovered from the saponification product in the form of its salts. As a further alternative, the distillation residues may be heated with an alcohol and a small proportion of a concentrated mineral acid, whereby a levulinic ester is recovered directly.
