Abstract

Condensation products are obtained by reacting esters of trihalogen fatty acids, which are substituted in the a -position, with esters of levulinic acid in the presence of metals, especially zinc. Dehalogenation with the formation of a double linkage in the fatty acid radicle is stated to occur, and the products are lactone esters with an unsaturated side chain. The reaction is carried out at the boiling point, preferably in dry benzene or dry ether, and the boiling is continued, e.g. for one hour, after all the zinc, which may be activated with iodine, is added. According to examples: (1) the ethyl ester of tribromo-n-valerianate is condensed with levulinic ester to give the g -lactone of a -allyl-b -methyl-b -oxyacid adipic ester; (3) the g -lactone of a - hexenyl - b - methyl - b - oxy - acid adipic ester is obtained from tribromo-n-caprylic acid ethyl ester and levulinic ester. The g -lactone of a -pentyl-b -methyl-b -oxy-acid adipic ester may be obtained in a similar manner.
