Abstract

A process of carbonizing vegetable materials, particularly applicable to the production of wood and peat charcoal, comprises impregnating the materials with salt solutions such as alkaline waste solutions or calcium chloride, with or without small quantities of acids, and carbonizing at 150-300 DEG C. under pressure, for example 8 to 9 atmospheres. The process gives high yields of acetic acid and methyl alcohol.
