Abstract
Acetic acid and methyl alcohol are evolved when waste sulphite-cellulose liquor mixed with salts such as magnesium, calcium or sodium chloride is heated to temperatures between 170 DEG and 180 DEG C., a pressure of from 5-8 atmospheres being employed. The carbon, which separates during the process, is rendered readily filterable by addition of wood waste, shavings, sawdust bark, &c. to the initial mixture. The solution of salts may be returned to the process. Mineral acids may be added to the original mixture. In an example waste sulphite-cellulose liquor, sawdust and "potash-end liquor" are heated to 180 DEG C. and the pressure raised to 6 atmospheres. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use of pressure, and temperatures from 150-200 DEG C. may be employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Sulphur dioxide is evolved when waste sulphite-cellulose liquor mixed with salts such as magnesium, calcium or sodium chloride is heated to temperatures between 170 DEG and 180 DEG C., a pressure of from 5-8 atmospheres, being employed. The yield is increased by addition of mineral acids to the mixture. The carbon also resulting from the process is rendered readily filterable by addition of wood waste, shavings, sawdust, bark, &c. to the initial mixture. The solution of salts may be returned to the process. In an example waste sulphite-cellulose liquor, sawdust and "potash-end liquor" are heated to 180 DEG C. and the pressure raised to 6 atmospheres. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) is not limited to the use of pressure and temperatures from 150-200 DEG C. may be employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
