Abstract

Water-resistant basic or neutral calcium sulphite in the form of lumps is produced by treating with sulphur dioxide at normal temperature calcium hydroxide in the form of lumps or in the form of bodies that have been shaped with the aid of water, and heating the resultant product between 100 and 400 DEG C., preferably in the presence of sulphur dioxide, until by dehydration the necessary stability in water has been obtained. Cooling of the product may take place also in the presence of sulphur dioxide. When using shaped bodies of calcium hydroxide, the shaping preferably takes place in the presence of a plasticizer such as sodium carbonate or of substances adapted to increase the porosity of the bodies, such as wood charcoal, active carbon, silica gel, asbestos, pumice stone, metallic aluminium, magnesium, or calcium, or ammonium salts. The products may be used for purifying liquids, or for removing oxidizing or acid gases, such as chlorine, ozone, carbon dioxide, or sulphur dioxide, from gas mixtures. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also a modification for the production of bodies containing neutral sulphite and calcium carbonate, wherein the shaped bodies consist of calcium hydroxide or carbonate or mixtures thereof, and after the sulphur dioxide treatment in the cold, a treatment with carbon dioxide is interposed, if necessary before the heat treatment. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
