Abstract

In a process for removing from water calcium, magnesium, iron, and manganese salts, free acids, and germs, the water is caused to flow over lumpy water-resistant neutral or basic calcium sulphite. Any excess of calcium sulphite or calcium hydroxide and any sulphate or chloride of calcium or magnesium present are precipitated by means of carbonates or phosphates of alkalies. The water may be treated with clarifying agents, such as aluminium or iron sulphate, active carbon, &c., and with germicidal and oxidizing substances, such as chlorine, hypochlorite, ozone, or hydrogen peroxide, before being passed over the calcium sulphite. It may also be passed through a sand or other filter before or after being passed over the sulphite. Specifications 445,411, [Group III], and 446,708 are referred to.
