Abstract
516,657. Purifying solutions of nickel and cobalt salts. UNIFLOC REAGENTS, Ltd., and SAMUEL, J. O. July 5, 1938, No. 19935. [Class 1 (iii)] Iron impurity, precipitated by Nickel or Cobalt Carbonate as hydroxide from slightly acid Nickel or Cobalt chloride or sulphate solutions is removed by filtering after adding at 60-100‹C. say 8 to 20 1bs. per 1,000 gallons of a peroxide, hydroxide, or higher oxide of Nickel or Cobalt, e.g., NiO2 nH2O, Co(OH)3, CO2 O3, in the presence of an added filter aid of aqueous cellulose, e.g., wood or paper, pulp which may or not be preliminarily flocculated preferably during pulping by adding to the neutral or slightly alkaline solution aluminium sulphate or chloride till pH 5 is reached, or by using the flocculating gel described in Specification 435,126. The peroxide &c. and filter aid may be premixed before addition and the oxidation may be facilitated by passing an air current. In examples the separate use of 10 1bs. and 40 1bs. per 1,000 gallons respectively' of peroxide &c. and cellulose pulp (containing 78 per cent. water) has little effect, but used in conjunction the rate of filtration at 70‹C. is more than doubled.
