546,675. Purifying liquids. AFRICAN SISAL PRODUCE CO., Ltd., RAMSDEN, Sir J. F., WALSH, C. L., and MAY, J. Feb. 3, 1941, No. 1406. [Class 46] [Also in Group V] Colloidal constituents are extracted from vegetable matter such as plants of the Agave family, sisal, bast fibre plants, fruits, apple pomace, sugar beet residues, coconut husks, spent tea leaves &c. by an aqueous solution of a silicate, which may be hot. Sodium metasilicate, sodium aluminium silicates rendered alkaline by sodium carbonate or caustic soda as described in Specifications 200,175, [Class 46], or 214,344, [Class 91], or a mixture of sodium metasilicate, sodium pyrophosphate and an emulsifying agent may be used. A gel may be precipitated from the extract by sulphur dioxide, alcohol, calcium chloride, carbon dioxide, &c. The extract may be used to flocculate fine suspensions e.g. coal slurry dosed with lime, aluminium sulphate being used to precipitate the ge1. Specification 545,630, [Group V], also is referred to.
