Abstract

533,023. Starch. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING CO. Aug. 1, 1939, Nos. 22270 and 22271. Convention dates, Aug. 22, 1938 and July 20, 1939. [Class 121] Starch is treated so as to destroy all thermophylic and other bacteria but without reducing its hot paste viscosity by treating a starch suspension with chlorine in a tower or by treatment with a hypochlorite solution at a low pH (about 1.5). The reaction is carried out at 95- 105‹F. Sulphur dioxide or sodium bisulphite is added to remove excess of chlorine and the suspension is neutralized with soda ash &c. The starch is filtered off, washed and dried. The treated starch may be mixed with di-sodium phosphate or other edible buffering substance of basic character to prevent the starch becoming thin when cooked with water under pressure. The treated starch is useful in making soups and in the canning industry.
