Abstract
526,636. Refining cellulosic materials. HESS, K. March 23, 1939, No. 9205. [Class 2 (ii)] Vegetable material such as straw is subjected to digestion with calcium hydroxide solution and then washed, for example with water, while simultaneously treating the fibres in a beating engine or similar apparatus, and thereafter the fibres are subjected to boiling with dilute caustic alkali solutions. If a dilute acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, is employed as the washing liquid, the treatment in a beating engine may be omitted. In an example, chopped rye straw is heated with a suspension of milk of lime. After running off the lime, the material is washed in a beating engine until the washing water no longer deposits solids on standing. The fibres are then boiled under pressure with a dilute solution of caustic soda. Specification 493,828 is referred to.
