526,399. Refining cellulosic materials. PALAZZO, F. C. March 15, 1939, No. 8287. Convention date, March 16, 1938. [Class 2 (ii)] Cellulose, particularly for the manufacture of rayon, is obtained from pine woods having a large resin content by subjecting the wood for a period of from 1 to 2 hours and at a temperature of from 90-95‹C. to the action of an alkaline lye, containing from 0.1 to 0.2 per cent. of sodium hydroxide, after which the product is digested in a bisulphite lye. The bisulphite digestion may be carried out at 106-108‹C. with a lye containing 0.5 to 1 per cent. of calcium oxide, and from 5 to 6 per cent. of free and combined sulphur dioxide. Bleaching of the treated cellulose may be carried out in two stages, with a hypochlorite solution which, without being acidified with strong mineral acid, contains about half of the hypochlorous acid in the free state and half as a calcium or sodium salt. A treatment with sodium hydroxide solution may be interposed between the two bleaching treatments. Last traces of hypochlorous acid may be removed by subjecting the cellulose material to treatment with sulphurous acid solution. Wood which may be treated by the process includes that of the red fir or Scotch pine, and the cluster pine or pinaster.
