Abstract

In obtaining waste liquors free from silica, when manufacturing cellulose by treating a cellulosic raw material with caustic soda lyes, in the manner claimed in the parent Specification, the hydrooxides or oxides of calcium and/or magnesium, with if desired the hydroxide of aluminium, are employed as precipitants while the alkalinity of the digster liquor is reduced by an amount approximately corresponding to the added quantity of calcium and magnesium oxide and hydroxide. The process may be used when the caustic soda lye also contains sodium sulphide, sodium sulphite, sodium sulphate, contact substances, phenols, or organic oxyacids or the like. The presence of organic oxyacids such as are formed when digesting vegetable substances with caustic soda increases the activity of the calcium hydroxide; waste liquor may therefore be added to the digester liquor. The application of the process to the production of cellulose from wheat or rye straw and esparto grass is described. The aluminium hydroxide may be used in the form of red bauxite. The liquor is also freed from carbon dioxide by the process.
