Abstract

An improvement in the process for the production of pulp from raw cellulosic vegetable material according to the parent Specification, comprises the causticization of the alkaline effluent with lime, the causticized effluent being used for digestion of the acid pre-treated material without the addition of fresh caustic alkali. In an example, straw is pre-treated in a continuous way with boiling sodium bisulphate of 1 1/2 per cent concentration in a ratio of 1 to 8. It is then washed. A dilute black liquor containing 4.0 grams per litre sodium hydroxide and 4.3 g./litre sodium carbonate is treated with a 10 per cent excess of lime and filtered. The filtrate, containing 6.9 g./litre sodium hydroxide, is used for the digestion of the washed pre-treated straw.
