Abstract

1407276 Caustic soda OJI PAPER CO Ltd 14 Nov 1972 52126/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division D2] A caustic soda solution is made by adding an ilmenite ore or a material containing a major proportion of titanium dioxide to sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate, heating the mixture to 900‹ to 1500‹ C., dissolving the product in water and separating the liquid from the sludge containing titanium dioxide. 20 to 40% by weight of titanium dioxide, based on the weight of sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, may be added and silica may be present with the titanium dioxide in a ratio of 1 : 1 to 1 : 2. The process may be used for the recovery of cooking chemicals from pulping waste liquor by adding titanium dioxide or ilmenite ore to a smelt from a recovery boiler in a chemical recovery process for soda pulping waste liquor, heating the mixture to 900‹ to 1500‹ C., dissolving the product in water to convert the sodium oxide component in the smelt into sodium hydroxide, and separating the mother liquor from the sludge containing titanium dioxide. Kraft pulping waste liquor may be so treated, the mixture of titanium dioxide and smelt, with the optional addition of silica, preferably being heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The titanium dioxide separated and precipitated from the mother liquor may then be recycled to the step of adding to a smelt after the titanium dioxide is heated to a temperature of 300‹ C. in the atmosphere and completely oxidized.
