Abstract
An alkali metal titanate is produced by sintering titania-containing material with alkali in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal fluoride, bromide or iodide, or an oxide of an element of Group II, III or IV of the Periodic Table or a mixture of such compounds, the catalyst being added in the proportion of 0.1-10 per cent based on the titania present. Catalysts specified are sodium bromide and aluminium, silicon and magnesium oxide. The temperature of heating may be 500-850 DEG C. for a period of 1-4 hours. Titania-containing materials specified are rutile, ilmenite, ilmeno rutile and titanium-bearing slag from the treatment of bauxite. The alkali may be in the form of anhydrous sodium carbonate.
