Abstract

Fluorinated alkanes are produced by contacting hydrogen fluoride and a halocarbon of the formula <FORM:1006456/C2/1> in which X is chlorine, bromine, or iodine' R1 is an alkyl radical, R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical, with a fluorination catalyst at elevated temperature. The catalyst may be activated alumina, hydrous chromic oxide, hydrous aluminium oxide, hydrous ferric oxide, a hydrous rare earth metal oxide or a metal halide. The temperature may be between 100 DEG and 400 DEG C. Various halocarbons are mentioned and the reaction may be used to separate 1-chloropropene, which is uneffected, from 2-chloropropene.
