Abstract
Uranium tetrafluoride is produced by reacting hydrogen fluoride, suitably in twice the theoretical amount, with uranium disulphate in aqueous dispersion at a temperature near the boiling point. The settled precipitate is washed and dried, e.g. by heating to 100 DEG C until the monohydrate is formed, and then to 400 DEG C in an inert gas or in vacuum to complete the dehydration. The dehydrated product may be converted to the hexafluoride by treatment with fluorine. The uranium disulphate may be prepared by reducing aqueous uranyl sulphate electrolytically, or with zinc or stannous chloride.
