Abstract

Uranium tetrafluoride is prepared with a reduced amount of impurities by reducing sufficient of the uranyl salt in an aqueous uranyl salt solution to cause a small fraction (1-5 per cent.) of the uranium to be precipitated as uranium tetrafluoride, removing the precipitate which is rejected, and then precipitating and recovering the remainder of the uranium tetrafluoride. Stannous chloride or zinc in acid solution may be used as reducing agent. Thus, uranium oxide may be dissolved in mineral acid, an oxidizing agent added to bring the uranium to the hexavalent condition, and aqueous HF is added and the reduction carried out near boiling point.
