Abstract

An aqueous solution containing argentic ions for use in oxidizing plutonium (see Group XL(a)) is prepared (a) by dissolving argentic oxide or peroxynitrate in a solution of nitric acid and silver nitrate or (b) by anodic oxidation of silver nitrate in nitric acid. Argentic oxide is prepared by oxidizing silver nitrate solution with potassium persulphate. Argentic peroxynitrate precipitates and is removed, the solution being treated with sodium bicarbonate solution to precipitate more peroxynitrate. Boiling water treatment converts the peroxynitrate to argentic oxide.
