Abstract

Uranium tetrafluoride is made by heating an aqueous solution of a uranyl salt with a reducing agent effective in acid solution, e.g. stannous chloride, with a substantial excess of hydrofluoric acid over that required to form the tetrafluoride. In examples, a solution of uranyl sulphate is prepared by adding tritaoctoxide and the amount of nitric acid necessary to oxidize it to the hexavalent condition to a slight excess of hot sulphuric acid and at least twice the stoichiometric amount of hydrofluoric acid is added along with stannous chloride dihydrate. Instead of uranyl sulphate, the acetate or chloride may be used, and instead of stannous chloride, granulated zinc may be used. Specification 696,053 is referred to.
