Abstract

In a process for polishing aluminium or aluminium alloys the metal is treated in a bath which oxidizes the metal and dissolves the oxide formed, the bath consisting essentially of a solution of phosphoric acid containing hydrogen peroxide or a compound forming hydrogen peroxide, for example, ammonium persulphate. The polishing may be effected by dipping the metal into the bath. The phosphoric acid can be regenerated by the addition to the bath of concentrated commercial nitric acid.
