Abstract
525,011. Cleaning metals. GROVES, W. W. (Monsanto Chemical Co.). Feb. 11, 1939, No. 4531. [Class 82 (ii)] Steels and steel alloys, particularly stainless steels, are pickled in a bath free from nitric acid and comprising ferric ions and fluoride ions, for example, ferric-sulphate and hydrofluoric acid, ferric fluoride and sulphuric acid, ferric fluoride alone, ferric fluoride and hydrofluoric acid, ferric sulphate and sodium fluoride with or without sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate, calcium fluoride, and sulphuric acid, or ferric sulphate and sodium hydrogen fluoride. A preferred solution contains 5-30 per cent. of ferric sulphate and 2 - 6 per cent. of hydrofluoric acid. The treatment may be preceded by pickling in an ordinary pickling bath such as sulphuric acid, and this preliminary treatment may be electrolytic.
