Abstract

An acid aqueous solution for the chemical brightening of aluminium and aluminium alloys contains hydrogen, fluoride and phosphate ions in amount strichiometrically equivalent to, by weight of the solution, 0.5-5 per cent nitric acid, 0.01-5 per cent hydrofluoric acid and 0.5-1 per cent orthophosphoric acid. Ammonium ions are preferably also present, as are ions of a metal electropositive to aluminium, e.g. Cu, Ag, Fe, Ni, Co, An or Pt. The hydrogen ion concentration is preferably maintained by the use of nitric acid; fluoride may be introduced as hydrofluoric acid, ammonium fluoride or ammonium bifluoride; phosphate as orthophosphoric acid or ammonium phosphate; ammonium ions as fluoride, phosphate, hydroxide or nitrate; copper as copper nitrate. The bath may be operated from 100 DEG F. to boiling point.
