Abstract

Aluminium or an alloy thereof is cleaned in a chromium free aqueous solution containing not more than 0.1 g/1 of chloride ion and containing from 0.18 to 1.4g/1 hydrogen ions, at least 2 g/1 of ferric ions, and 0.4 to 3.3g/1 of fluoride ions. The hydrogen ions may be provided by sulphuric hydrofluoric, sulphamic or nitric acids or an ammonium or alkali metal acid sulphate salt. The ferric ion may be ferric sulphate, fluoride, formate, nitrate, and fluosilicate. The fluoride ion may be ferric fluoride or fluorosilicate, alkali metal fluorides, fluorosilates or fluoroborates, aluminium, ammonium, alkali metal or ammonium acid fluorides, and hydrofluoric acid. The composition may be prepared as a powder to which water is added, in which case magnesium carbonate may be added as a drying agent. The ratio of fluoride to ferric ion concentration against hydrogen to ferric ion concentration is expressed as a graph (see the Fig. not shown). The solution may be regenerated by adding hydrogen peroxide. Air or oxygen may be bubbled through the solution during immersion. The pH is between 0.5 and 1,5, The aluminium may be first cleaned in an alkali e.g. 70% borax, 17% tetrasodium pyrophosphate, 1% sodium gluconate, balance wetting agent.
