Abstract

1383383 Etching DIVERSEY DEVELOPMENT Ltd 3 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 19323/72 Heading B6J Aluminium or aluminium alloys are etched with an etchant comprising (A) an aqueous alkali solution containing 3À5-200 grams per litre of alkali metal (e.g. sodium, potassium or lithium), hydroxide, (B) a chelating agent ranging in amount from 2% of the hydroxide to 40 grams per litre (e.g. sodium gluconate, sorbitol, mannitol or tannic acid), (C) a nitrate or nitrite in an amount exceeding 0À5% of the hydroxide (e.g. sodium nitrate or nitrate), and (D) a fluoroalkyl surfactant or combination of such surfactants in an amount from 10 p.p.m. (e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a perfluoralkyl acid, the perfluoralkyl radical having 4-16 carbon atoms). The etchant may also comprise sodium thiosulphate, phosphates, and fluorides.
